Sexual freedom is necessary for social change: Bipana Thapa
Please wait for a while.....her attention moved towards the satisfaction of the customers when this scribe was talking to her. Yea, there is a reasonable discount for you, plz visit again. She now came back to the point not for business but for the discussion of Nepali film industry. When you get into the fashion club at Bhatbhateni, you will find an established face in the Nepali Film Industry i.e. Bipana Thapa. Here are some excerpts:
What are you busy at nowadays?
I\'m affiliated with two films, soon to be made. I have just started a fashion club at Bhatbhateni.
You came to the conclusion that you won\'t be able to continue your career as an actress and attracted towards fashion business?
That is one reason, of course. I\'m not pulled to this sector all of a sudden. I have already worked as a fashion designer in more than a hundred films, and frankly telling you, I\'m not satisfied with the style and standard of the fashion used in the Nepali Film Industry. This is an ample attempt to bring out reforms in fashion in Nepali Film Industry.
Is Film industry only for the commercial purpose or has larger social role and responsibility?
It is business, in fact. But it has the relation of hobby and crave of so many people. The film that can touch the heart of common public is the supreme ...... ................ of art
You have been affiliated with the Nepali Film Industry for more than 13 years. What is the speed of change during this period that you have seen?
Almost all films used to get good result in those days. If you included some sentimental aspect, there used to be hardly a chance for film to be unsuccessful. But now Nepali audiences long for such a high quality that our limited resources can not fulfill their demand. Anyway we are trying to win the hearts of our audiences.
Actresses in the Nepali film have been often presented in the glamorous role and they are hardly found as a serious and important character. Why do you think it is so?
The word \'glamour\' is nearer to female than that of the male. People observe the actress through different angle - the angle of glamour- This is in fact the demand of audiences.
At present, people make the blame on the actresses that in the name of glamour they are heading towards vulgarity. Do you agree?
I don think so. This is a traditional concept. I believe in sexual freedom. This (sexual freedom) is one of the ways for the better change in society. Nowadays when our society is gradually becoming liberal about sex, the rate of murder, rape and the like crimes are descending.
Those are still in the screen who were popular a decade ago in the film industry. Isn\'t it an aloofness of the newcomers in this sector?
Yea, newcomers are a few in number but this is not only the problem of this sector. Overall development of our country is very slow which has left not-so-good-impact in this field. And still the condition is not so unsatisfactory.
Being an actress, purely non-political job, Bipana Thapa is involved in politics, People say so. How do you defend?
It is quite normal that as a conscious citizen I have interest in politics. I have no any complain for those who blame me for raising my finger when the country is in complete political chaos and confusion. Truly speaking many people affiliated with the film industry are far from the political consciousness. So they raise such issues. In my case , every citizen has to speak against ill-political system and trend.
Do you have any plan to involve in active politics?
Not such plan at present. But if I have to represent film industry in any government machinery, I don\'t step back. Even I should make myself ready if the people demand representative from the film sector to the Cabinet. We are also legitimate representatives like the political leaders who have won the hearts of the audiences equal to that of the votes.
You have recently rejected the responsibility got in the Censor Board. Is it true ?
In fact Film Development Board is such a responsible body that frames the policy for Nepali film. At the time when there is a high demand of 33 percentage woman representation in every sector, not even a single woman has been nominated in recently formed Development Board. I didn\'t find good to be in the place only for the monetary purpose. Lack of 33 percentage woman representation in the Development Board is the disrespect of whole women involved in this field, let alone my case.
If so, why don\'t you perform organized protest along with all women involved in this field?
Yes, I have already taken the initiative for this but conducive environment has not been formed yet. I wish, media could also play greater role for this.
Do you have any subject matter of the film which you dream to materialize?
Oh! Yea, I have got the strong crave to make a film based on the vocal queen Taradevi and play the role as well.
Plz tell if you have any further ambition.
Despite my reasonable contribution to the film sector, I have not considered myself as a successful artist yet. I desire to be an example in the society after being a successful artist.
